Tadelakt for Bathrooms & Showers: The Perfect Wet-Area Plaster Finish
Tadelakt is a centuries-old Moroccan lime plaster celebrated for both its artistry and water resistance while also being appreciated for its beauty, and function. Today, Tadelakt is designed for use in wet areas like showers, tub surrounds, and backsplashes. It can also be used for decorative dry area applications, and outdoors. Unlike tile, which relies on grout lines that can discolor over time, Tadelakt provides a continuous finish that feels smooth, organic, and timeless.
What Makes Tadelakt Special for Bathrooms
Bathrooms are one of the most demanding environments in the home, requiring surfaces that are both durable and resistant to moisture. Tadelakt is uniquely suited for this challenge. Its finish is naturally water-shedding, making it an ideal choice for shower enclosures, tub surrounds, and even bathroom vanities.
Tadelakt eliminates the need for grout, reducing areas where mold and mildew can develop. Its lime-based composition is naturally resistant to fungi, and its seamless, smooth finish makes the surface easy to clean while adding a handcrafted, luxurious character to any space.
With Color Atelier’s Tadelakt Shower Plaster, this traditional finish has been reimagined for modern spaces, bringing luxury and performance together in one elegant product.

Why choose Tadelakt over microcement?
While both finishes can create a seamless look, they deliver a different aesthetic experience. Tadelakt is a lime-based plaster, while microcement is cement-based and that difference shows in the final finish. Tadelakt has an unmistakably refined character: silky-smooth to the touch, with subtle movement and a soft, luminous sheen that gives spaces a warmth and depth microcement typically can’t replicate. Tadelakt is also known for creating soft, rounded transitions and sculptural lines, elevating both wet and dry areas with a truly luxurious feel.
Beyond aesthetics, Tadelakt is also a compelling choice for those who prioritize natural materials. As a mineral, lime-based finish, it’s often considered a more eco-conscious and healthier-feeling alternative to cement-based systems, especially for interiors where you want a more natural, breathable surface.
If you’re after a seamless finish with a uniquely elegant, organic look—and you want a more natural option - Tadelakt is the clear choice.

The Unique Texture of Tadelakt Plaster
One of the most remarkable qualities of Tadelakt plaster is its texture. The surface has a soft, silky touch and a gentle movement of tones that shift subtly in the light. Unlike flat paint or cementitous or acrylic plasters, Tadelakt creates a finish that sits somewhere between eggshell and satin, glowing with natural depth. Additional burnshing will increase the sheen level.
This effect is achieved through careful application and polishing (burnishing). The plaster is compressed with a trowel, or stone traditionally, then finished with soap or wax to create its signature smoothness. The result is a surface that feels both tactile and refined, instantly elevating any space.
Benefits & Considerations of Tadelakt
Tadelakt plaster offers a rare blend of beauty and practicality that makes it especially appealing for bathrooms and other wet areas. Its smooth, uninterrupted surface resists water without the need for grout, which makes it easier to keep clean and helps prevent mold and mildew. Along with these benefits, it brings a luxurious, spa-like feel to a space, creating soft, flowing walls that enhance everyday routines.
As a natural lime plaster, Tadelakt is eco-friendly, breathable, and grows stronger over time, making it both a sustainable and durable option. It comes in a wide range of mineral-based colors, so it can be customized to suit any style, whether you prefer warm, earthy neutrals or bold, modern shades. Because the application process requires experience and careful technique, professional installation is usually recommended to ensure the best and most long-lasting results. With only minimal maintenance, typically an occasional resealing with soap or wax, Tadelakt can retain its elegance for many years.
Frequently Asked Questions About Tadelakt Plaster
Is Tadelakt good for showers?
Yes, Tadelakt plaster is one of the best finishes for showers and wet areas. With proper substrate preparation and Tadelakt’s proper application and sealing, it creates a durable, water-resistant surface that naturally sheds water. Unlike tile, it has no grout lines, making it easier to clean, and its lime-based composition is naturally resistant to mold and mildew.
How long does Tadelakt plaster last?
With proper care, Tadelakt can last for decades. For regular cleaning, use a sponge along with a small amount of mild natural soap such as an olive oil soap and warm water. After each use, we recommend removing any standing water with a squeegee- as there are no seams or grout lines, this is both practical and advisable. Avoid harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners, or abrasive tools that can damage the finish. Avoid Tadelakt surface from etching and chipping which can impact the water repellant property of the finish. Repairs are possible depending on the level of damage.
For maintenance, we recommend re-waxing every 2-3 years, depending on the use/wear of the shower. Wax has an eggshell-to-satin like finish and you will notice the plaster appearing more matte meaning you will need to reapply wax sealant or the wax paste.
Can you use Tadelakt on bathroom walls?
Absolutely. Tadelakt works beautifully on bathroom walls, and ceilings, not just inside showers. It creates a seamless, continuous look that adds texture and luxury while standing up to humidity.
What colors does Tadelakt come in?
Color Atelier’s Tadelakt Shower Plaster is available in a curated palette of mineral-rich shades, from soft neutrals to deep, dramatic tones. These natural colors enhance the material’s depth and texture. If Tadelakt custom coloring is required, please contact us, we'll be happy to help!
Is Tadelakt plaster high-maintenance?
Not at all. While it requires an experienced hand during application, once installed, it’s surprisingly easy to care for. Occasional resealing with wax is recommended, but day-to-day cleaning is as simple as wiping the smooth, seamless surface. Avoid harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners, and skip abrasive tools or sharp objects—these can lead to etching, scratching, or chipping.
