FAQ

What is Limewash Paint?

Lime Paint has been around for thousands of years. It is a truly wonderful traditional material that ages beautifully. Color Atelier's Limewash Paint is crafted using traditional European techniques, formulated with the finest, sustainable ingredients, composed of hydrated aged lime and mineral pigments, all made in small batches at our facility in California, ensuring exceptional quality and timeless beauty. Color Atelier's modern Limewash creates surfaces with an organic elegance for a relaxed, natural look and feel.

What is the main difference between Limewash and Plasters?

Limewash is a thinner material applied with a brush, allowing it to soak into porous surfaces. Plaster, by contrast, has a thicker, paste-like consistency and is applied with a trowel to create a solid layer that can be smooth or textured. Our limewash paint provides a matte coating with soft tonal variations, while our plasters can be used as either a base coat or a final finish—ranging from coarse to smooth to glossy, depending on the type of plaster and the application technique. Both lime-based plasters and limewash are breathable, allowing moisture to pass through the surface. While both finishes offer good durability, plasters are more resilient, and can even be used in high-moisture areas such as showers, and also floors.

Is it necessary to prime my walls prior to applying Limewash or Plaster?

Color Atelier Limewash Paint can be applied directly over porous, absorbent materials such as bricks, cement, stucco or plaster. Surfaces that are bare or have been previously painted, like drywall, should be primed with our Mineral Primer. Prior to plastering, prepare the substrates with the recommended primer. Apply Lime Plaster, smooth, on level 4+ finished drywall primed with Color Atelier Mineral Primer (for a smooth outcome) or Color Atelier Bonding Primer (for a slightly textured outcome). Apply Limestone Plaster, Tadelakt and Slurry on level 3+ finished drywall primed with Color Atelier Bonding Primer.

Is it necessary to apply Sealer on my Limewash and Plaster walls?

Sealer is recommended for use in high traffic areas such as hallways and bathrooms on limewash and plaster surfaces. Color Atelier Sealers are applied as a protective clear topcoat allowing surfaces to resist marking and staining, and making these finishes wipeable.
